As we head towards the King’s Speech, which will begin this Labour Government’s second Parliamentary Session with a host of new policy priorities, I’ve been reflecting on the landmark legislation we have passed so far in government.
With a changing and increasingly volatile world around us, I’m proud of the work we have done to rebuild the foundations of our country, support people with the cost-of-living crisis, and set us all up for a more equal future.
The legislation we have passed includes:
- The Employment Rights Act – delivering the biggest upgrade in workers’ rights in a generation.
- The Renters’ Rights Act – providing renters with more security through the abolition of ‘no fault’ evictions and a host of other protections.
- The Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Act – bringing 450,000 children out of poverty over this Parliament- including over 5,000 here in Luton South and South Bedfordshire.
- The Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act – establishing Great British Rail as a publicly owned railway to improve services for passengers and staff.
- The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act – supporting families with the cost of living and helping to give all children the best start in life.
- The Great British Energy Act – creating a publicly owned organisation to bring clean energy and cheaper bills to British consumers and industry.
- The Crime and Policing Act – tackling violence against women and girls, anti-social behaviour and retail crime.
- The Water (Special Measures) Act – reversing the decline in environmental standards and increasing accountability in the water industry.
- The Tobacco and Vapes Act – creating the first ever smoke-free generation.
- The Victims and Courts Act – delivering long overdue reforms to protect victims and rebuild their confidence in our justice system.
- The House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Act – removing the right of unelected Hereditary Peers to sit in the House of Lords.
I’m proud to be part of delivering this change for communities across the country, and especially right here in Luton South and South Bedfordshire.
Lots of work done, and lots still to do.
